I tried, goddamn, I tried.
- - -The last time he saw her dance was at her wedding. He had watched from the sidelines, watching his childhood friend, rival and love waltzing with that prissy Austrian. At the time he had scoffed, proclaiming that love had no place in his life; he had no need for it. He was a warrior. Warriors didn’t love.
And here he was again, watching from the bar as the other nations danced with their respected partners. She was dancing with him again. He watched as her hair fanned out behind her as she turned, her skirts swaying when she twirled. He scowled and finished the rest of his drink, slamming the glass on the bar as the music ceased and an applause commenced.
He started towards the exit, hands searching his pockets for his keys, when he felt a hand grab his jacket from behind. Wheeling around, he found himself coming face to face with her. Her cheeks were flushed and she was panting for breath.
“You’re leaving?” she asked.
“Ja,” was his short reply.
“But you haven’t danced with me yet,” she said, with that dazzling smile of hers.
His stomach flipped. She was asking him to dance. Swallowing nervously, he managed to ask, “You…You want to dance?”
She laughed and held out her hand. “Come on, silly, I’ll teach you,”
Blinking at her hand, his expression softened not into a smirk, but into a smile.
“How long have I waited to hear that?”
